The United States deported another 116 illegal immigrants to India in the third round on Saturday (February 15). A US plane carrying the immigrants landed in Amritsar, Punjab.
However, the handcuffs-shackles controversy has not gone away this time, according to local media. According to news agency PTI, an illegal immigrant who returned from America on Saturday night claimed that he was brought onto the plane wearing handcuffs. Not only that, the illegal immigrant claimed that his feet were also shackled.
West Bengal-based Anandabazar reported that this is the first time the United States has sent back a planeload of illegal immigrants since Donald Trump met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Earlier, on February 5, a military plane sent by Trump had brought back Indian illegal immigrants handcuffed and chained. There was a lot of discussion and criticism about it. Before the controversy could end, Modi went on a two-day visit to America. He met with Trump at the White House.
Meanwhile, another illegal immigrant told NDTV that their hands and feet were tied on the plane. Their mobile phones were also confiscated.
Among the 116 illegal immigrants who were deported to India on Saturday, two were accused in a murder case, PTI reported.
