BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed hope that national elections will be held soon after the minimum reforms are completed. He said, "We have very clearly said national elections first; then local government elections."
The meeting of the National Consensus Commission with representatives of 26 political parties and alliances was held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at around 3 pm. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir spoke to reporters after leaving the commission meeting.
"We hope that a minimum consensus will be reached on these reforms very soon. Our expectation is that national elections will be held very soon based on that," he said.
Mirza Fakhrul said that the Chief Advisor held the first meeting with the political parties regarding the National Consensus Commission. In this meeting, he spoke about the need for reforms. He called on the parties to discuss the reform reports submitted by various commissions. The parties will talk to the commissions about this. An attempt will be made to reach a consensus. That is the main thing. Today is the initial discussion, different political parties have said different things.
He added that the first meeting was mainly introductory, where different political parties presented their own views. However, no effective and constructive discussions have taken place so far.
