Renowned lyricist, composer and musician Pratul Mukherjee passed away after being under treatment in the hospital for several days. The 83-year-old musician was seriously ill and was in the ICU of Kolkata's SSKM Hospital before his death.
Pratul was admitted to SSKM Hospital after falling seriously ill at the beginning of this year. According to hospital sources, he suffered from heart disease after undergoing surgery. After that, his physical condition started deteriorating rapidly. The situation gradually became complicated. When his physical condition deteriorated on Monday night, he was shifted to the ICU again. Pratul Mukherjee breathed his last on Saturday morning.
Pratul was born on June 25, 1942 in Barisal, undivided Bengal. His father, Prabhat Chandra Mukherjee, was a government school teacher. After the partition, he moved to Upper Bengal with his mother, Bani Mukherjee, and Pratul. He started living in Chunchura. Pratul used to compose poems from a young age. He started with the poem 'Ami Dhan Katar Gaan Gai' by poet Mangalcharan Chattopadhyay.
Pratul himself used to write songs, although he had no formal musical education. Even while lying in a hospital bed, he would sing to the doctors, "I sing in Bengali." But this is not the only one, Pratul is the creator of many popular songs.
His first album is 'Pathre Pathre Nache Agun' (1988). However, it is not a solo album. 'Jete Hobe', released in 1994, is Pratul's first solo album, and his last album is 'Bhor' (2022). This album has compiled his unreleased songs.
Apart from 'Ami Banglay Gaan Gai', his popular songs include 'Alu Becho', 'Chokra Chand', 'Tomar Ki Kono Palpa Hai', 'Sei Kadayy', 'Februarir Ekush Tarikh' etc. He never liked using musical instruments in his songs. But his songs kept the listener engrossed.
