Ukraine claims that the radiation shield at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was damaged by a Russian drone attack. Ukrainian officials have warned that the attack could pose a risk of environmental disaster.
The horror of the Russian attack
The Ukrainian Energy Ministry said the Russian military used multiple kamikaze drones to attack the Chernobyl exclusion zone, damaging part of the defense structure built after the 1986 nuclear explosion.
"This attack is extremely dangerous. It could pose a threat not only to Ukraine, but to the whole of Europe," said Ukrainian Environment Minister Oleksiy Kuzmenko.
What is the risk of radiation?
According to scientific analysts, while Chernobyl's current radiation levels are stable, major damage to the protective shield could spread radiation to the surrounding area.
“If a large crack develops in the protective dome, radiation could spread outside, which would have dire consequences for public health,” said a Ukrainian nuclear expert.
Russia's response
The Russian Defense Ministry has rejected the allegations and claimed that such an incident could have occurred due to a flaw in Ukraine's own defense system.
International reaction
✅ United Nations: It expressed concern about the attack and called for an end to military attacks on nuclear facilities.
✅ United States and European Union: Russia called the attack 'reckless and irresponsible' and hinted at new sanctions.
✅ IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency): It is monitoring the situation and plans to send a team of experts to ensure security.
The Ukrainian government has said that more advanced defense systems will be installed in the Chernobyl area and measures will be taken to reduce radiation risks with the help of the international community.
Experts say an attack on a nuclear facility would violate international law and pose a serious threat to global security. Ukraine and Western countries have strongly warned Russia to refrain from such attacks.
Analysts fear that this incident could lead to a more tense turn in the Russia-Ukraine war.
