An expatriate husband has been accused of hanging a housewife from a ceiling fan with a towel wrapped around her neck after killing her in Begumganj, Noakhali. The family is alleging that the execution was staged by strangulation, not hanging.
The deceased housewife, Nasrin Akter Brishti (26), is the daughter of Nuruj Ali of Shahin Villa, Goyespur village, Kadirpur union, No. 16, Begumganj.
The accused husband, Md. Abdul Halim Sumon Molla (35), is the son of Nuruzzaman Molla of Mollabari, Hajipur village, Hajipur union no. 14, Begumganj. He is a Qatari expatriate by profession.
The body was buried at the family graveyard of the deceased's ancestral home after the autopsy on Sunday (February 9) afternoon. Earlier, late on Saturday (February 8) night, Begumganj police recovered Brishit hanging from a ceiling fan in his in-laws' bedroom. Later, the body was sent to the 250-bed General Hospital for autopsy in the morning.
Family sources say that about seven years ago, Bristhi got married to Sumon Mollah. Since the marriage, Sumon Mollah has been demanding dowry money from Bristhi's father's house on various pretexts. According to the demand, Bristhi's family has been giving Sumon Mollah five to six lakh taka, thinking about the happiness of her daughter. Even after that, various disputes have been going on in Bristhi's family. The family members have accused Sumon Mollah of having an immoral extramarital affair as the reason for the disputes. They say that Sumon Mollah has been in relationships with multiple women, which is why he is indifferent to his married wife and constantly tortures her physically and mentally by demanding dowry. In continuation of that, Sumon Mollah and his family members strangled Bristhi to death and hung her from the ceiling fan wrapped in a towel.
The deceased's cousin Fakhrul Islam Kiran said, "We went to the spot and saw that even though Bristi was hanging from the ceiling fan, her feet were on the bed and the towel wrapped around her neck was somehow stuck in her snout. This does not prove that Bristi committed suicide by hanging herself. Rather, it is clear evidence that she was strangled to death and the hanging drama was staged. Even the door of the room where she was hanged was not locked from the inside, it was locked from the outside. And if they did not kill my sister, then why are all the family members running away? We have not filed any case yet. Since her death, they have not heard from my sister even once, they are all absconding. I demand a proper trial and execution for my sister's murder."
Begumganj Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Liton Dewan said, "Upon receiving the information, the body was recovered and sent to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital for autopsy. After the autopsy, the body was handed over to the family. We have not yet received any written complaint in this regard. Further legal action will be taken if we receive a complaint."
