It has been alleged that five people were injured by opponents of a land dispute in Tahirpur, Sunamganj, after they failed to return the land title deeds.
The incident occurred between 10:30 and 11:00 am on Saturday in Islampur village of Badaghat union of the upazila.
The injured are Asik Mia, son of the deceased Kala Mia of Islampur village in the upazila, his brother Akash Mia, Saktar Mia, son of Abdul Ali of the same village, Fazlul Haque, son of Akkal Ali, and Zafar Ali, son of Tunu Mia.
The injured have been admitted to Sunamganj District Sadar Hospital and Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
On Saturday night, people from Islampur village in the upazila and traders from Badaghat Bazar, the commercial center, said that a man died after buying land in the Pasharwati area of Kala Mia village in Islampur village of the upazila.
To return the title deed of the land, Manjur Ali, son of the deceased Fajr Ali of the village, inflicted various tortures on the entire family, including Kala Mia's son Asik.
On Friday, when they went to the Badaghat market in the upazila, Sohrab and his men locked Sohrab, son of Sahab Uddin of Chandrapur village, a relative of Manjur Ali, who was at the cattle market, in the shop and threatened Asik and another family member who was with him to return the deed.
When Asik and his family members, along with the arbitrators from Islampur village in the upazila, went to the yard of neighbor Manjur Ali's house to investigate the incident, Manjur Ali, his family members, and relatives organized themselves and in a pre-planned assassination attempt, slashed Asik, his brothers Akash, Fazlul Haque, Saktar, and Jafar with sharp axes, causing bloody injuries.
Later, the villagers rescued the injured and took them to Sunamganj District Sadar Hospital and Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for admission.
Asik Mia, son of the deceased Kala Mia of Islampur village in the upazila, who was seriously injured in the attack on Saturday night, made this complaint and said, "After my father's death, Manjur Ali, his family members, and relatives repeatedly humiliated us to return the land deed, and in the final attempt to kill us, they brutally hacked us with a machetes and left us with bloody wounds."
When the personal mobile phones of Manjur Ali and his younger brother Ziaur Rahman of Islampur village of the upazila were called to inquire about the complaint, no statement was received from them as the phones were switched off.
