At least 37 people were injured in an attack by stray dogs in Kapasia upazila of Gazipur. The incident has caused extreme panic among the locals. Vaccines were not available at the local hospital. (March 3) The incident took place between 6 am and 7 am on Monday in the villages of Rampur, Trimoni, Peorite, Anjabo, Malwar Tek and Pirojpur of the upazila.
The injured are Juena and her daughter from Anjab village in the upazila, Manik Mia from the same village, Taslima, a seventh-grade student of Unity Model School and College, Selim and his wife from the same village. Matiur Rahman and Shahidullah from Rampur village in the upazila, Kabir Hossain and his wife Shahnaz and son Limon, and others are unidentified. Kapasia Upazila Health Complex Emergency Department sources said that at least 37 people injured in dog bites were given first aid this morning. However, most of the patients went to Mohakhali Infectious Diseases Hospital after they did not get the vaccine at this hospital.
A female patient's bone was removed. Doctors also said that everyone has been asked to take the necessary vaccinations due to the risk of infection and rabies from dog bites. Local resident Kafeel Member said, "We are afraid to even go out on the road. The dogs are suddenly coming and biting, especially today in the early hours of the morning, they bit my wife and child." The victims complain that the number of stray dogs in the area is increasing day by day, and these dogs are suddenly attacking pedestrians.
Among the injured are some women and elderly people, including children. Kapasia Upazila Health Complex Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Mamunur Rahman said, "As there is no vaccine in this hospital, 6 out of 9 people have been referred to Dhaka in serious condition." Upazila Animal Resources Officer Dr. AKM Atiqur Rahman said, "Dogs were vaccinated in the upazila three years ago. I will visit the scene today and take necessary action in this regard."
