The accused in the rape case of a girl student who attacked the police in Kurigram has escaped with handcuffs. The absconding accused has been identified as Shahnewaz Abir Raju (30). He is accused of raping a disabled schoolgirl and dealing drugs.
The attack took place at around 10 pm on Monday (February 24) in the Dhanarchar Charergram area of Ward No. 4 of Jadurchar Union in Roumari Upazila of the district. Police have arrested accused Raju's mother Abeda Akter Razia (48) and her cousin Runa Akter (23) for obstructing government work.
Confirming the matter, Roumari Police Station OC Lutfar Rahman said that the two detainees were sent to jail through the court on Tuesday.
Shahnewaz Abir Raju (30), who escaped with handcuffs, is the son of Ali Azgar of Kashiabari village in Jadurchar union of the upazila. Raju is accused of raping a disabled schoolgirl and drug dealing. Meanwhile, Roumari Police Station SI Awal Hossain, who was injured in the attack, is undergoing treatment at the Upazila Health Complex.

Earlier, on February 17, Raju was accused of raping a disabled student. After this incident, Raju and his family, facing the onslaught of villagers, took shelter at his aunt's house in Charergram, Dhanarchar. Meanwhile, the victim's family filed a complaint against Raju at the police station.
Based on the complaint, a three-member team led by SI Awal Hossain went to the area to arrest Raju. There, the police arrested Raju with Yaba and handcuffed him. At that time, Raju, his mother and cousin attacked the police. After biting SI Awal's hand and injuring his private parts, Raju fled with the handcuffs.
Upon receiving the information, additional police rushed to the spot and rescued Awal, as well as arresting Raju's mother and cousin and taking them to the police station. A ramda was also recovered during a search of the house. Nabiul Islam, resident physician of Roumari Upazila Health Complex, said that an injured policeman is undergoing treatment.
Kurigram Assistant Superintendent of Police (Roumari Circle) Mominul Islam said, "I am out of work. I cannot give details. However, I have heard about the injury of a policeman bitten."
Roumari Police Station OC Lutfar Rahman said that efforts are ongoing to arrest the fugitive Raju in handcuffs.
