Due to the workers' protest, traffic movement on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway was stopped from 8:30 am on Monday, creating a long queue of vehicles for at least 3 kilometers.
Ashok Kumar Pal, ADC (Traffic) of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, said, "As far as I know, a worker at Panorama Garments in the Bypass intersection area fell ill on Sunday."
Despite his illness, the garment factory refused to grant him leave for medical treatment. He later died.
"When the news spread among the workers, they started protesting on Monday morning."
He said that at one point, when the workers took up positions on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, traffic on that road was stopped. This has caused traffic jams from the Dhaka-Mymensingh Bhogra Bypass intersection to Board Bazar in the south and to Chandana Crossroads in the north.
Traffic police officer Ashok Kumar said that the law and order forces are working to control the situation, adding that the situation remained the same till 10:15 am; the workers' protest continues.
However, the police officer could not reveal the name and identity of the deceased worker.
