Arif Lapti (35), son of Taramia Lapti of Sadipur Badsha Kandi village in Shibchar, Madaripur, tried to forcibly rape a housewife on Thursday, February 20.
The woman's husband, a van driver by profession, left home for work at 3 a.m. on the day of the incident, as he does every day.
Since Arif Lapti's house and the housewife's house were in the same village, he had been keeping an eye on the housewife for quite some time. Five minutes after the housewife's husband left the house for work, Arif knocked on the door, thinking that the victim was her husband coming. As soon as the door opened, Arif Lapti pressed his face against her and entered the house with a knife to her throat.
Her 2-year-old child was sleeping in the house at the time. Accused Arif Lapti then held a knife to the child's throat, stripped the victim naked, and raped her for almost an hour before fleeing before dawn.
When her husband returned home in the morning, the woman told him everything and they went to the police station to file a complaint.
Based on the complaint, the police, led by SI Renuka, were able to arrest him this morning.
Accused Arif Lapti had been involved in immoral activities at various times before, and the villagers expelled him from the area two years ago.
He is also accused of harassing women at various times, including in drug cases.
