Thirteen passengers were injured and helper Shahadat Hossain was killed when a night coach named Diganta Paribahan lost control and crashed into a tree in Satkhira.
The accident occurred at 4 am on Thursday (February 20) at the Circuit House intersection in Satkhira city. The injured have been rescued and admitted to various clinics including Satkhira Sadar Hospital, Medical College Hospital.
The injured are Alamgir Hossain, son of Daud Ali of Mazat village in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira, Abdur Rouf, son of Bahar Ali Tarafdar of Joynagar village in the same upazila, Tapan Ghosh, son of Tarak Chandra Ghosh of Ramnathpur village in Debhata upazila, Ruhul Amin, son of Bahar Ali of Bazargram Rahimpur village in Kaliganj upazila, and Shahinur Rahman, son of Ashraf Ali Gazi of Nilkanthpur village in the same upazila. The addresses of two others, China and Abdullah, are not known.
The first five people have been admitted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital and the last two to Satkhira Medical College Hospital. In addition, six people have been admitted to various clinics.
Tapan Kumar Ghosh, who is undergoing treatment at Satkhira Sadar Hospital, said that he boarded a Diganta Paribahan vehicle from Chanchra in Jessore to Satkhira on Wednesday night to reach Satkhira. The driver repeatedly applied the brakes after leaving the vehicle due to falling asleep on the way.
On the way, when the vehicle reached the Circuit House intersection in Satkhira city around 4:30 am on Thursday, the driver lost control due to sleepiness and hit the vehicle with a tree next to the Asha Samiti. As a result, the tree entered in front of the vehicle. At that time, the vehicle twisted and at least 13 passengers, including himself and the helper, were injured. He said that there were 40 to 45 passengers in the vehicle.
Dr. Ashraful Haque, a doctor at the emergency department of Satkhira Sadar Hospital, said that China and Alamgir were shifted to Satkhira Medical College Hospital as they were in critical condition. However, while cutting down the tree to evacuate the passengers, Satkhira Police Lines Constable Nayeb Ali was injured. Helper Shahadat was killed in the incident.
Satkhira Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shaminul Haque said the car helper was killed in the accident. The injured have been admitted to various hospitals and clinics.
