Eight shops have been gutted in a fire in Ujirpur upazila of Barisal. The fire broke out at 12 am on Tuesday in the Jayashree bus stand area of the upazila, said Ujirpur Fire Service Station Officer Abdur Rashid.
Abu Taleb's grocery store, Azizul's wooden furniture store, Faisal's easy bike shop, Dhanu Sardar's Thai glass shop, Alamin's motorcycle garage, Kabir's rent-a-car shop, Zakir Sikder's and Sabuj's motorcycle workshops were burnt down in the fire. The station officer of the fire service said that the fire started at Kabir's rent-a-car shop around 12 midnight due to a short circuit. Since there was no one in the shops at that time, the fire spread quickly. Upon receiving the information, two units each from the Tara and the Gournadi Upazila Fire Service brought the fire under control in three and a half hours.

The extent of the damage caused by the fire cannot be said without an investigation. However, the fire service official claimed that goods worth crores of taka were recovered. BNP Central Executive Committee Deputy Forest and Environment Secretary Kazi Rawnatul Islam Tipu, Shikarpur BNP convener Abdur Raf Mia, BNP senior leader Advocate Asaduzzaman Badsha, freedom fighter Motaleb Hossain and leaders of local BNP affiliates visited the scene immediately.

Uzirpur Upazila Executive Officer Md. Ali Shuja said, we have inspected the scene. Damage assessment work is underway. The upazila administration will try to help the affected people. Meanwhile, when the Upazila Executive Officer reached the spot, the locals demanded that the canal flowing from the side of Jayashree Bazar be excavated. Due to encroachments, the canal is currently without water flow. Due to which the fire service had to face difficulties while extinguishing the fire. In view of the demands of the locals, the Upazila Executive Officer assured to inspect the canal and take necessary measures. At that time, joint convener of the municipal BNP Md. Gias Uddin Akon, shop owner Bamrail Union BNP General Secretary Hafizur Rahman Shahin Sikder, Abdul Halim Master, Limon Khan were present.
