A dealer named Emdadul Islam Rocky (34) was caught with rice by the army while trying to sell rice belonging to the poor in Baniachong, Habiganj. He is the joint convener of Baniachong Upazila Chhatra Dal and the son of Md. Nurul Islam Mia of Daspara village.
The incident took place on Monday (February 17) afternoon at Barabazar in Baniachong Sadar. Based on the information of Lance Corporal Shamim and Soldier Siraj, OMS rice dealer Emdadul Islam Rocky of Union No. 1 of Baniachong Upazila had been selling OMS rice at a price of 30 taka per kg to the poor and helpless people for the past 3 days at a shop adjacent to IFIC Bank in Barabazar Baniachong. OMS rice was being sold at a higher price in the market instead of being given to the poor and helpless people. On receiving this information, a person named Janu Mia was arrested red-handed while selling 05 bags of 50 kg of OMS rice, totaling 250 kg.
In the wake of the aforementioned incident, Mobile Court Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Saiful Islam conducted a mobile court to charge Emdadul Islam Rocky with selling OMS rice, cancelling the OMS dealer's license, imposing a fine of 1 (one) lakh taka in cash and confiscating 20,000 taka as security.
