Nazmul Hossain, Ranishankail (Thakurgaon) Representative: Due to high demand for Iftar, some unscrupulous traders have doubled the prices of daily necessities in the last two or three days, capitalizing on the month of Ramadan. On Sunday (March 2), visiting various markets and the weekly biggest market in Ranishankail Upazila, the prices of Shibalesh lemons have increased from 20 taka to 50 taka, cucumbers from 25/30 taka to 50 taka, local chilies from 30 taka to 60 taka, Rajshahi brinjals from 20/25 taka to 60 taka, jam brinjals from 25/30 taka to 60 taka, local bitter gourds from 70/75 taka to 100 taka / local raw garlic has increased from 100 taka to 120 taka. However, the prices of most other raw materials and spices have remained somewhat normal. However, the price of fish has increased slightly compared to before.
Jaherul Islam, a buyer from the Battali area of the upazila, said, "Bangladesh is a country where the prices of things double during the month of Ramadan. A buyer named Anisur said that a lemon worth 20 taka is worth 50 taka on the occasion of fasting. What kind of country is this where the prices of these things double during the month of Ramadan?" Many others also said that in various Islamic countries of the world, when the month of Ramadan comes, the prices of things come down to half, but in Bangladesh, they increase and double.
However, buyers are saying that the prices have increased at the farmer level, what can we do? We buy from them and then sell in the market. We have to sell at the price we can buy on the day we buy. However, the prices of some items have increased within a day or two on the occasion of the month of Ramadan. Many victims believe that the administration should increase its surveillance to keep the prices of daily necessities within the reach of the buyers.
