Afroza Khanam, a senior high-ranking assistant of the Fire Service and Civil Defense of Moshang village, Ward No. 2 of Otra Union, Uzirpur Upazila, Barisal district, filed a case with the Uzirpur Model Police Station against her husband, Md. Sakhawat Hossain Mallick, a driver of the same company, alleging physical torture for dowry.
According to the victim and the complaint, on January 9, a husband and wife came to the house of the driver, husband Sakhawat, from Dhaka, and pressured his wife Afroza Khanam to take a loan of Tk 20 lakh from the office to build a luxurious building under construction in the village. If Afroza revealed anything, he beat her up and threatened to divorce her. At that time, she was subjected to brutal torture and became unconscious. Later, her parents and brother rescued her and admitted her to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barisal. Local dignitaries tried to resolve the matter several times, but failed.
Later, Afroza Khanam filed a dowry and women abuse case after discussing with senior officials. When asked about this, Md. Sakhawat Hossain, a driver working in the Savar Upazila Fire Service and Civil Defense, Dhaka district, said that the family problem had been resolved. Afroza Khanam's younger brother Naeem of Moshang village said, "We are currently facing threats after filing a case against our sister-in-law Sakhawat."
Md. Abdus Salam, officer-in-charge of Uzirpur Model Police Station, said that a case has been filed under the Prevention of Torture of Children and Women Act at Uzirpur Model Police Station. A chargesheet will be submitted to the court after a proper investigation into the matter.
