Leaders and activists snatched Abdul Wahab, the president of Pabna's Sujanagar Upazila Awami League, from a police car while shouting slogans of Joy Bangla. Eight policemen were injured in the incident. The incident took place in front of Mathurapur High School in Sujanagar municipality on Sunday afternoon.
Abdul Wahab, former chairman of Sujanagar Upazila and former municipal mayor, is a fugitive accused in a case filed in connection with the attack on students during the anti-discrimination student movement in July-August.
Locals and police said that in the afternoon, when Wahab came out after praying at a mosque near his house, a team of police from Sujanagar police station arrested him and put him in a car. At that time, several people surrounded the car. They asked the police to release him.
But when the police refused, more people gathered and forcibly snatched him from the car, shouting slogans of "Joy Bangla". Eight police members who were part of the team were injured in the scuffle.
