Two sisters died after drowning in a pond in Jhikargachha upazila of Jessore. The incident took place at around 10 am on Tuesday (February 18) in Matikumra village of Hazirbagh union of the upazila.
The two deceased children were named as Suraiya (2) and Sumaiya (3). They were the daughters of Yamin, a resident of the village, and his brother Yusuf, an expatriate in Malaysia.
According to police and local sources, two sisters, Sumaiya and Suraiya, went fishing in the pond with their grandparents and mother this morning. At that time, they were standing on the bank of the pond. Later, the grandparents and mother could not find them there and started searching. After a while, they saw the bodies of the two children floating in the pond. Later, their bodies were recovered and taken to the Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared the two dead.
Bablur Rahman Khan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jhikargachha Police Station, said, "I have heard the news of the death of two sisters together after drowning in a pond. The families of the deceased have not filed any complaint with the police station in this incident."
