In a talk show on GTV, Shafiqul Alam, the press secretary to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's chief advisor, raised tough questions about the role of the Awami League and commented on the question of Awami League's remorse. He said, "Have you ever seen any Awami League leader or any pro-Awami League journalist say 'sorry'? Have you seen them express remorse?"
Shafiqul Alam claimed that if not everyone in the Awami League is responsible for the genocide, then why have the innocent never publicly said that we condemn those involved in the genocide? Is it because of them that the party is in this situation today?
He alleged that everyone in the Awami League seemed to be speaking in unison. Even "those who are directly involved in the genocide are supporting the party leader. Yet this leader is a murderer, thief and the hero of the disappearances." Quoting the human rights organization Human Rights Watch, he claimed, "The disappearances and killings took place on the direct orders of Sheikh Hasina.
According to Shafiqul Alam, “How is it possible for the Awami League to be included in the political process? Have they apologized? Have they repented? If not, then how is their political rehabilitation possible? This is a terrible reality.
Citing the example of the Nazi Party in Germany, he said, "If an opinion poll had been conducted in Germany in 1945, it would have shown that 30% people supported the Nazis."
In this situation, he believes that until the culprits are tried, "the Awami League's participation in the political process is impossible." According to him, this issue should be resolved through dialogue between political parties, but it is difficult to accept the Awami League as normal in the political process until it apologizes and accepts responsibility.
