Chittagong, 18 February 2025: Immediately after the formation of the Chittagong District Committee of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, there were resignations, protests and blockades. Tension prevailed throughout the day at Chittagong University and various places in the city due to dissatisfaction with the leadership of the committee.
Resignation immediately after the committee was formed
On Monday night, the organization's central leaders announced the formation of the Chittagong district committee. However, some important leaders of the committee resigned, alleging nepotism and lack of transparency. One of the resigning leaders said, "Those who have been carrying out the movement at the field level have been excluded and beneficiaries have been brought in to lead. This is unacceptable."
Protests and blockades
The resigning students and their supporters began protesting in various parts of the city on Tuesday morning. In the afternoon, they blocked the main gate of Chittagong University, blocking traffic. The protesters chanted slogans, "I will not accept the preferred committee, I will not accept it."
In the afternoon, protesters formed a human chain and took out a protest march in the Bahaddarhat area. They demanded, "We need to restructure, we want transparent leadership."
Response from the organization's central leaders
The central coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement said, "There has been some misunderstanding regarding the committee. It will be resolved through discussion." However, he rejected the allegations and said, "There was transparency in the formation of the committee, there was no bias here."
A section of the organization has demanded restructuring, but the central leaders have not yet taken a formal decision on the matter. The protesters have warned that they will continue their program if their demands are not met.
