The central bank will release new notes of 5, 20 and 50 taka in the market from March 19 on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. However, these notes will have the signature of the current governor Abdur Rouf Talukder and the picture of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The new design notes that are being released, that is, without the picture of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, will be available during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
Bangladesh Bank spokesperson and executive director Arif Hossain Khan gave this information on Wednesday (February 19).
He said, "At the moment, Bangladesh Bank has a huge amount of previously printed notes. Therefore, to prevent wastage of money, new design notes are not being printed right now. Because canceling the currently printed notes will waste a huge amount of money. The central bank does not want to waste this money."
Stating that the previously printed notes will be released in the market on the occasion of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, he added that the newly printed notes will be released in the market by April-May. It will not be possible before that.
It is to be noted that Bangladesh Bank will exchange new notes from March 19 to March 25 on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. Except for weekly and public holidays, new notes of 5, 20 and 50 taka will be exchanged under a special arrangement through 80 branches of various scheduled banks in Dhaka and various offices of Bangladesh Bank. However, the same person will not be able to receive new notes more than once.
Earlier, the decision to introduce new design banknotes was approved at the board meeting of Bangladesh Bank on December 8. According to the decision, the design of 20, 100, 500 and 1000 taka banknotes will be changed. The government is working on this.
Reliable sources at Bangladesh Bank have said that the new notes will not feature Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's image. Religious sites, Bengali heritage and 'graffiti of the July Revolution' will be added.
