Police have arrested 19 more leaders and activists associated with the Awami League, Jubo League and the banned Chhatra League in raids at 16 police stations in Chittagong city, according to a press release sent to the media by the city police's public relations wing on Sunday (February 9) afternoon.
The arrested are Md. Maidul Islam (35), Md. Jahidul Islam Prakash Roni (19), Shahidul Alam (27), Shamsu Alam (30), Jahangir Alam (45), Priyatosh Chowdhury (62), Imamul Haque (28), Md. Pavel (30), Md. Moniruzzaman Riyad (39), Md. Sumon (29), Md. Tamjid Hossain (21), Md. Naeem Gazi (21), Md. Kochir Uddin Liton (38), Ishtiaq Wasif (25), Russell Ahamed (38), Md. Jewel (30), Md. Ismail Hossain (36), Mohammad Idris (36) and Haji Md. Ibrahim Sharif (49).
The notice further said that they were arrested between 2 pm on Saturday and 2 pm on Sunday. They have one or more cases against them under the Special Powers and Anti-Terrorism Acts, including attacks on the anti-discrimination student movement.
On the other hand, police have arrested former councilor of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Rekha Alam Chowdhury. Police said that the court ordered her to be sent to jail after she was arrested under Section 54. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Double Mooring Police Station Kazi Rafiqul Islam confirmed this information.
Rekha Alam Chowdhury is the leader of the Chittagong Metropolitan Women's Awami League. She was elected twice as a councilor from the reserved ward number 8 of the Chittagong Metropolitan City Council, which consists of the Enayetbazar, East Madarbari and West Madarbari wards of the city. She also served as the acting mayor and panel mayor of the Chittagong Metropolitan City Council.
OC Rafiqul Islam said that Rekha Alam was arrested from her home in the Double Mooring police station area around 11:30 pm on Friday. She was arrested under Section 54 and handed over to the court on Saturday morning, and the court ordered her to be sent to jail.
