One of the accused in the case filed over attacks on indigenous people Sayeed Fazlul Karim Swapan (42)The police have arrested.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said that a special team of Motijheel Police Station conducted a raid in the Fatulla area of Narayanganj at around 2:30 am on Saturday and arrested him.
Background to the attack
On January 15, tribal students went to the NCTB building in Motijheel to protest the removal of graffiti with the word 'Adivasi' from textbooks. A group of people had already taken up positions there under the banner of 'Students for Sovereignty' and later attacked the tribal students when they reached there. At least 20 people, including women, were injured.
The next day, Jagdish Chakma, president of the Dhaka Metropolitan branch of the Pahari Chhatra Parishad, filed a case with Motijheel Police Station, naming 16 people as the plaintiff and 200-300 others as unknown accused.
Police said that during the investigation, CCTV footage of the clash and various videos collected during the investigation were reviewed and Syed Fazlul Karim Swapan, who attacked Rupaiya Shrestha Tanchangya (24), was identified. After confirming Swapan's location with the help of information technology, a team of Motijheel police station conducted a raid in the East Shiachar area under Fatulla police station in Narayanganj and arrested him.
Administration response
Police said, Syed Fazlul Karim Swapan was one of the planners of this attack.He is being questioned and the operation to arrest the other accused is ongoing.
