The Election Commission (EC) has released the final list of the country's total voters, including those added to the list in 2024. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin said that the current total number of voters in the country is 123.732 million.
The CEC made this information at the inaugural ceremony of National Voters' Day in front of the Election Building in Agargaon on Sunday (March 2).
This year's theme is 'Yours and My Bangladesh, Let's Vote Together'. The EC has organized a discussion meeting on the occasion of Voters' Day. In addition, the field-level offices will hold various programs.
In this regard, National Identity Registration Division Director General ASM Humayun Kabir said on Saturday that according to the existing rules, National Voters Day is celebrated on March 2 every year. According to that rule, the final voter list will be published on Voters Day. Earlier, the draft voter list was published on January 2.
The EC said on Saturday that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin will inaugurate the National Voters' Day activities in front of the Election Bhaban in Agargaon at 9:15 am on Sunday. Apart from the CEC, four other election commissioners and all officials and employees including the senior secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat will be present at the inauguration ceremony. After the inauguration ceremony, a procession will take out at 9:30 am. After that, a discussion meeting will be held in the basement of the Election Bhaban at 11 am. At the ceremony, smart cards will be handed over to some voters injured in the July mass uprising, the EC's public relations wing said.
On January 2, the EC published the draft updated voter list. 18 lakh 33 thousand 352 people were included in the list. Accordingly, the number of voters in the country is 12 crore 36 lakh 83 thousand 512. Of these, 6 crore 33 lakh 30 thousand 103 are male, 6 crore 3 lakh 52 thousand 415 are female and 994 are transgender voters.
EC officials said they believe the number of new voters will increase by more than two million after the completion of the demands and objections to the draft list.
EC officials also said that the work of updating this year's voter list, which has been collecting information from house to house since January 20, is also progressing. In this process, information of a total of 5.1 million citizens has been collected. Those born on or before January 1, 2008 but not yet registered as voters are being added to the list. At the same time, the names of the deceased are being excluded. The work of updating the voter list is scheduled to be completed by next June. The EC is taking this work forward with a view to holding elections in December.
