The United Nations Human Rights Commission has released a report on the Awami League government's crackdown on the July protests. In this report, the UN has revealed evidence of serious human rights violations against Awami League leaders.
The UN has called for an international initiative to bring back Awami League leaders including Sheikh Hasina who have fled to India and has also offered assistance in filing cases against Awami League leaders including Sheikh Hasina at the International Criminal Court. The question therefore arises strongly, are the days of Awami League coming to an end?
The UN report has internationally identified the Awami League as the party that carried out the massacre and has created a negative image of the party in the international arena. This will cause the Awami League to lose its acceptance as a political party worldwide.
The Awami League has tried to dismiss all the allegations in a press release issued from Delhi. But there is no opportunity to create unnecessary controversy over this report prepared by the United Nations. If the Awami League and the concerned people had investigated with their own manpower within the country, they would have had the opportunity to create controversy. The government has closed this opportunity.
The government can present this report in court and start the trial of the Awami League. This is international proof of the Awami League's atrocities.
The report was not published in Dhaka, nor was it even handed over to the government in advance. If the government had published it from Dhaka, its acceptability would have been less. But the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, Volker Turk, himself, published the report.
Apart from the Awami League, India will also face a crisis due to sheltering Sheikh Hasina. India's rating on the Human Rights Index may drop due to sheltering criminals involved in serious crimes against humanity recognized by the United Nations.
India is already in trouble over the alleged killing of an expatriate Sikh in Canada. The United States is deporting illegal Indians after Donald Trump took power. In such a situation, if India gets into a dispute with Europe and America over Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League, the crisis will intensify. There is a fear that not only the Awami League, but also India will be in trouble due to this report.
Overall, the UN report is very disappointing news for the Awami League. As a result, it will be difficult for the Awami League to return to politics. Sheikh Hasina and other Awami League leaders will be able to avoid punishment by staying in India; but they will not be able to avoid trial. Now the government will be able to take help from the UN report in the trial process, which will help speed up the trial and ensure the recognition of the Awami League as a genocidal party. The demand to ban the Awami League is becoming stronger due to the UN report.
It is not possible for Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League to come out of this accusation of genocide against humanity. Perhaps the leaders and workers of the Awami League do not understand this. They are still holding onto hope, perhaps Sheikh Hasina will come back again! Sheikh Hasina is also trying to confuse the leaders and workers by making various provocative statements while sitting in India.
