BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud has commented that there is no opportunity to waste time talking about reforms. He said, "I am hearing new things. Sometimes they say proportional elections, sometimes local government elections, then national elections. Then they will carry out reforms, finish the trial of Sheikh Hasina. There is no opportunity to talk about all these things. No one has given them that place, that responsibility."
He made these remarks at a rally organized on Wednesday (February 19) afternoon at District Judge Court Road in Maijdi, Noakhali. The Noakhali District BNP organized the rally to demand price control, improvement of law and order, and early parliamentary elections.
He said to the interim government, "People have doubts about your impartiality. In your words, in the words of your advisors. It seems that they are leaning in one direction. If that doubt is a concern, you will no longer have any acceptance by the people of Bangladesh. To run this country, you will have to take the mandate of the people."
Referring to contemporary politics, he said, "I am telling those who will benefit or are benefiting from prolonging it. You think you have become a part of this government. As long as this government can be maintained, you will benefit, you will remain a part of the government, this is not possible. Those who have entered the process of prolonging power. I am telling them clearly, whoever they are, they have to come out of there. People have sacrificed 16 years to return the ownership of elections."
He further said, "Today, one day at a time in Bangladesh is passing by, one day at a time is passing by without democracy. One day at a time, the people of Bangladesh are passing away from the political, democratic, constitutional power. We want to see our government by voting. Who will be accountable to the people. In democracy, there is no other way except elections for accountability."
Amir Khasru said, BNP is committed to fulfilling the aspirations of the people. BNP's politics depend on the people of this country. Their only responsibility is to hand over power to the elected government through national elections in the coming days. And if they have a strong desire for reforms, then we are willing to present the reports of the commissions they have prepared to the next elected parliament. After discussing in parliament, everyone will do the reforms where necessary. The most important thing is that we will implement our 31-point plan. We are committed to the nation. No one needs to worry about reforms.
District BNP convener Mahbub Alamgir Alo presided over the rally, moderated by member secretary Harunur Rashid Azad, and BNP Vice Chairman Barkat Ullah Bulu spoke as the main speaker. BNP Chairperson's Advisor Zainul Abedin Faruk, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, BNP Chittagong Divisional Organizing Secretary Mahbuber Rahman Shamim, Chittagong Divisional Co-Organizing Secretary Harunur Rashid, Chittagong Divisional Co-Organizing Secretary Barrister Mir Helal Uddin, National Executive Committee member Mamunur Rashid Mamun, District BNP Joint Convener Advocate ABM Zakaria, etc. also spoke at the rally.
