Members of a landless family formed a human chain and protested in front of the court premises demanding the withdrawal of the false case filed against Awami League leader Abul Kalam Safi Chowdhury, who was arrested in a joint forces operation from Safi Nagar in Subarnachar, Noakhali, and his unconditional release.
The landless people started the human chain and protest program on the road in front of the Noakhali Chief Judicial Magistrate Court at 11:30 am on Tuesday. At that time, the remand hearing of arrested Awami League leader Abul Kalam Sofi Chowdhury was going on in the court, said his lawyer Md. Mokammel Hossain Azam.
Rozina Akhter, Monowara Begum, Parveen Akhter, Jannat Begum, Mahima Begum, and many other landless women from Safi Nagar area of Char Jubli Union of Subarnachar Upazila spoke at the human chain and protest procession. More than two hundred landless women were present at the time.
Landless women speakers said, Abul Kalam Safi Chowdhury is a friend of our landless people, he has protected us from the clutches of the oppressors with his own labor and provided shelter. Safi Chowdhury was not involved in any kind of riots. Yet she has been arrested without any guilt and implicated in a false case. We demand her unconditional release along with the withdrawal of the false case.
The defendant's lawyer Md. Mokammel Hossain Azam said that the investigation officer of the case, SI Apu Barua of Char Jabbar Police Station, applied to the court for a five-day remand of the accused Abul Kalam Sofi Chowdhury. Later, after the hearing, the court granted him a one-day remand.
Note: On the early hours of Wednesday, February 12, a joint force conducted a raid in Safi Nagar, Zia Char area of Charjubili Union, Subarnachar Upazila, Noakhali and arrested Abul Kalam alias Safi Batainna (60). Police said a country-made ramda and a knife were recovered from him and six cases were registered against him.
