Dhaka, 18 February 2025: BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman said, "The people of Bangladesh are being deprived of their fair share of Teesta River water, which is a violation of international law. Bangladesh's demands must be raised at international forums, including the United Nations, to achieve their fair share of water."
He made the remarks while virtually joining a public meeting organized on Tuesday afternoon demanding a fair share of Teesta river water and the implementation of the Teesta Master Plan. The program, organized under the slogan 'Jago Bahe Teesta Bachao', was led by BNP's Rangpur divisional organizing secretary Asadul Habib Dulu.
Tarique Rahman alleged, "Bangladesh's neighboring country, India, is controlling the natural flow of water by building dams upstream of the Teesta River. During the rainy season, water is released suddenly, which causes floods. On the other hand, during the dry season, agriculture and the environment are under threat due to lack of water."
He further said, "Water is not a matter of mercy, it is our right. If BNP gets the responsibility of running the state, it will implement the Teesta Master Plan and improve the living standards of the people of the northern region."
Commitment to implement Teesta Master Plan
Tarique Rahman said, "Unless the Teesta problem is resolved, desertification in the northern region cannot be prevented. This requires national and international initiatives. If the BNP forms the government, it will give top priority to implementing the Teesta Master Plan."
He called on the leaders and activists to remain united and said, "We will say together—'Jago Bahe Save Teesta', just as we say—'Jago Bahe Save Bangladesh'. Democracy will be re-established through the power of the people."
