The largest protest march in history was held in Nilphamari demanding the release of former acting secretary general of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Maulana ATM Azharul Islam. An estimated 100,000 people participated in the nearly 3-kilometer-long march.
The procession started from the city's Borabazar Mosque at 3 pm on Tuesday (February 18) and after a half-hour road parade, the rally was held at Chowringhee intersection. The procession was led by District Jamaat Ameer Principal Maulana Abdus Sattar.

The chief guest at the rally was Central Shura member, Rangpur regional team member and former district Ameer Abdur Rashid. District Ameer Principal Maulana Abdus Sattar presided over the event, while District Nayeb Ameer Dr. Khairul Anam spoke as a special guest. District Secretary Professor Maulana Antazul Islam moderated the event.
Also speaking, Saidpur Upazila Ameer Hafez Maulana Abdul Muntakim and other Upazila Ameers. Secretaries of the district, 5 upazila and 3 municipal committees and other leaders were present.
The speakers demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Jamaat leader Maulana Abu Taher Muhammad Azharul Islam, who is imprisoned in false cases, and the withdrawal of all cases.
