Journalists working in the district have formed a human chain at Chatkhil Police Station in Noakhali to protest the filing of a false case against Jago News and Khabar Kagoj's Noakhali correspondent Iqbal Hossain Majnu under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
They gave a 48-hour ultimatum to withdraw the journalist's name from the case during a human chain organized in front of the Superintendent of Police's office on Monday (February 17) afternoon.
The speakers said that after Jago News and Khabar Kago published news against several corrupt people in Noakhali, they have conspired to harm journalist Iqbal Hossain Majnu. Most recently, he is being harassed by being accused in a political case filed by Chatkhil Police Station for writing about irregularities in the construction of the Noakhali Information Complex.
According to the case source, on January 24 at 7 pm, Chhatra League and Jubilee League leaders and activists marched in Bansa Bazar of Mohammadpur Union under Chatkhil Police Station carrying pistols, cocktails and local weapons on the rumour of the resignation of the chief advisor. On February 9, Sramik Dal leader Masud Alam filed a case with the police station accusing 84 people in this incident. Journalist Iqbal Hossain Majnu has been named as the 55th accused in the case.
Journalist Iqbal Hossain Majnu said, on January 21, I published a news report in Jago News about irregularities in the construction of the Noakhali Information Complex, which involved hiring work worth Tk 15 crore on fake certificates, and on January 26, I published a news report in a newspaper titled "Irregularities in the construction of Tk 15 crore". The Public Works Department also formed an investigation committee in this regard. Those involved in those irregularities have accused me in that case of systematically harassing the labor leader by giving him money. I have not been to the Chatkhil area in the last one year.
