The investigation into the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi is being conducted with a new perspective. Retired Supreme Court Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and retired Rear Admiral Mohammad Sohail have been questioned at the jail gate in the interest of investigating the case.
They were interrogated by a high-powered task force and the information they provided is being verified. PBI Additional Superintendent of Police Azizul Haque said they had applied to the court on February 16 and were interrogated on February 18 after permission was granted by the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate.
Additional Superintendent of Police Azizul Haque said, "Justice Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Mohammad Sohail have been questioned as witnesses in the Sagar-Runi murder case. The information given by them is now being verified." In addition, the accused in the case, Enam Ahmed alias Humayun Kabir, was questioned at the jail gate and the information given by him is also being verified.
Although the names of various individuals have emerged over a long period of time in the investigation into this murder, no proper solution has yet been found.
The High Court on September 30 last year transferred the investigation activities of RAB to a high-powered task force formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs for the investigation of the Sagar-Runi murder case. However, several applications were filed in the court for a proper investigation into the murder. The court has set a time limit of six months for the investigation and the next order has been fixed for April 6.
Meanwhile, in order to conduct the investigation process in a fair and speedy manner, plaintiff in the case, Nowsher Alam, has expressed hope that the task force will submit its report in April and that it will be implemented smoothly.
