One of the most historic stadiums in Bangladesh has been renamed again. The Bangabandhu Stadium in Paltan has been renamed by the National Sports Council (NSC). Today (Saturday), the venue has been renamed 'National Stadium, Dhaka' in a letter signed by National Sports Council Secretary Md. Aminul Islam, ndc.
Established in 1954, this stadium was previously known as Dhaka Stadium. Various sports including cricket and football have been held at this ground. Pakistan played its first home Test at Dhaka Stadium.
Bangladesh's first Test match was also held here in 2000. Before that, the stadium was named Bangabandhu National Stadium in 1998.
Like many other facilities in the country, many facilities in the sports arena were named after the families of the previous heads of government. The interim government has decided to change the names of all those facilities.
In light of this, the National Sports Council last week renamed 150 upazila stadiums. They have been renamed after their respective upazilas. In line with that, after changing the names of upazila stadiums, the name of this national-level stadium has been changed today.
