Pavipravi Representative:
When a cricket tournament was being organized under the banner of Chhatra Dal at the Sher-e-Bangla Hall (now Ziaur Rahman Hall) of Patuakhali University of Science and Technology (PUST), ordinary students opposed it. At one point in the scuffle, the organizers under the banner of Chhatra Dal were forced to retreat.
On Thursday (February 27) night, a short-pitch cricket tournament was organized under the banner of Chhatra Dal at the badminton court of the university's Sher-e-Bangla Hall. During this, a long argument and scuffle broke out between Chhatra Dal and general students when general students asked them to remove the banner.
At one point, at 11 pm, the university's acting assistant proctor and assistant professor Md. Abdur Rahim and the provost of the student hall, professor of the statistics department Md. Mehedi Hasan Sikder arrived at the scene and mediated between the two parties. Later, they were forced to take down the Chhatra Dal banner.
In this regard, Sajjad Hossain Naim, a student of the Faculty of Agriculture, said, "Since politics is banned on campus, organizing a tournament under the banner of a political party is clearly a violation of the law. Our only request is that the fascist form of Chhatra League should not return to the campus in any other way. Besides, we, the general students, went there out of respect for the rule that student politics is banned in the university."
He added, "We never wanted the game to be stopped, we just wanted there to be no political banners. However, the teachers who were present at the scene initially voted in favor of continuing the game by keeping the banners, which shocked us. Later, in the face of protests and gunfire, they decided to remove the banners."
In this regard, Azim Hasan Dipu, leader of the university's Chhatra Dal, said, "We organized a tournament under the sponsorship of the Chhatra Dal, but suddenly some students came and interrupted and threatened to stop the game. We argued and pushed with them over this. However, we did not want any trouble, so the matter was resolved peacefully through the teachers."
When asked how the tournament was organized under the banner of Chhatra Dal despite the university banning politics, he said, "Those who obstructed it could have directly complained to the administration. If the administration had thought of it, they would have taken action against us. But they have no right to come and obstruct it like this."
In this regard, Provost of Sher-e-Bangla Hall-1 Professor Dr. Abdul Malek said, "Political activities are completely prohibited in the university and the administration does not condone any political activities. No permission was taken to organize this tournament. Yesterday's incident with the students is unacceptable. The university administration is discussing the matter and the next course of action will be decided."
