Students of Patuakhali University of Science and Technology (PUST) have renamed Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall as Sultana Razia Hall at the Barisal campus.
On February 24 (Wednesday) at 5 pm, the general students of the university took the initiative to tear down the previous nameplate and put up a new banner with the name Sultana Razia Hall attached.
It is known that on February 20, a circular signed by the university's Registrar Professor Dr. Md. Iktiar Uddin changed the name of Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall on the Barisal campus to July 36 Hall. However, students said that they did not give the name of their choice and named it July 36.
In this regard, Masuda Akhter Rifa, a 12th batch student of Animal Husbandry discipline, said, "We never wanted our hall to be named after any member of the Sheikh family. We always wanted our hall to be named after a noble woman, who would be a source of inspiration for the students. The name "Sultana Razia" is a symbol of women's empowerment, leadership and education. She was the first Muslim female ruler in history. Therefore, this name expresses courage, intelligence and recognition of the role of women."
In this regard, the provost of the hall, Mosammat Kulsum Begum, said, "Students constantly come to me and say that they do not like the name given by the authorities. They want to name the hall after a wealthy woman as an ideal. I have informed the sirs about this. Just as the previous name was named through a process, this one will also be changed through a process and subject to discussion by the Academic Council."
It is worth noting that since the fall of the fascist government on August 5, many government establishments have been renamed. In light of this, the general students of the hall signed a petition to change the name of Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall and a proposal was made to name the hall after a noble woman.
