Police have arrested a young man named Shahin Howlader (43), alias Kasai Shahin, on charges of raping a garment worker in Dumki, Patuakhali. The alleged rapist Kasai Shahin was arrested from his house near Anand Bazar in the upazila on Friday night and was produced in court on Saturday.
According to police sources, Shahin Howlader (43), alias Kasai Shahin, a meat trader from Pirtala Bazar, son of Bharatia Rahim Howlader of Ward No. 1 of Srirampur Union of the Upazila, had been in a love relationship with Lamila Begum (23), a garment worker and daughter of Nur-Islam Sikder of Ward No. 9 of Lebukhali Union of the same Upazila, for a year. Due to this relationship, under the pretext of marriage, they took the garment worker to various houses and residential hotels, including her ancestral home, and had sex several times. The rapist Kasai Shahin took several pictures and videos of their intimate moments, which Lamia also managed to get hold of. The last time, on the night of February 26, she was raped by Shahin against her will at Lamia's ancestral home. When pressured to get married that day, Kasai Shahin refused and quickly left and stopped all contact. On the morning of February 28, when Kasai Shahin (43), his wife Sharmin (30) and son Miyad (18) went to Anandabazar area to look for Kasai Shahin, they beat up garment worker Lamia severely, injured her in various parts of her body and left her on the road. At that time, on hearing the screams of the garment worker, the people around came and rescued her and sent her to Dumki Upazila Hospital. After receiving primary treatment at the Upazila Hospital, she was transferred to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital. In this regard, Lamia, the rape victim, filed a case (Case No. 1/2 February 25, Section 9(1)/ 323 and 506 Penal Code) against Shahin and three others at Dumki Police Station under the Rape and Torture of Women Act. The main accused in the case, the rapist Kasai Shahin, was arrested and the police sent him to court.
Dumki Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Zakir Hossain admitted the truth of the case and confirmed that the accused has been produced in court.
