The expelled Jubo Dal leader in Sylhet, who was fired in the face of a hawkers' protest over extortion charges, has now been arrested. Police have arrested Joydeep Chowdhury Madhav, the expelled co-organizing secretary of the Metropolitan Jubo Dal, in connection with extortion and kidnapping.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police arrested him from Devkona village under Shantiganj police station in Sunamganj on Sunday. Madhav is the son of Ajit Chowdhury of Dariapara in Nagari.
Police said that on February 28, a hawker named Kajal Mia was kidnapped from the sidewalk in front of the Sylhet Zilla Parishad under the leadership of Joydeep Chowdhury and brought to Sitara Mansion in Zindabazar. There, they threatened her with a knife and demanded a ransom of Tk 16,500 and beat her up. Later, another Tk 30,000 was demanded from her.
Meanwhile, hawkers protested by blocking roads in Zindabazar of the city on Friday night in protest of the incident. After receiving the news, Metropolitan BNP General Secretary Imdad Hossain Chowdhury went to pacify the hawkers and assured them of taking action against the accused. Two hours later, Jubo Dal leader Joydeep Chowdhury Madhav was expelled from the center at around 12 midnight.
After Kajal Mia filed a case with Kotwali Police Station on Saturday for extortion and kidnapping, police conducted a raid in Shantiganj, Sunamganj and arrested her, said Mohammad Saiful Islam, media officer of the Metropolitan Police.
