Police have arrested Joypurhat Sadar Upazila Awami League President Anwar Hossain (64). He has a total of six cases against him, including two murder cases.
He was arrested from Khanjanpur area of Joypurhat Sadar Upazila at 3 pm on Monday (February 10). Joypurhat Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nur Alam Siddique confirmed the matter. The arrested Anwar Hossain is the son of Habibur Rahman of Biswaspara Mohalla of Joypurhat district town.
Awami League leader Anwar Hossain is one of the accused in two cases filed in connection with the murders of Najibul Sarkar Vishal and Mehedi Sheikh, who were killed during the anti-discrimination student movement in Joypurhat on August 4 and 5. In addition, four more cases have been filed against him since August 5.
Police said that Anwar Hossain was arrested from Khanjanpur area of Joypurhat Sadar Upazila in a raid based on a secret tip-off. He had been in hiding since the change of government.
Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station OC Nur Alam Siddique said, "There are two murder cases and four other cases against the arrested Anwar Hossain at the police station. He had been in hiding for a long time. After his arrest, he was sent to jail through the court."
